Once you get how the author writes and you are in a quiet place, this book becomes an easier read. In the end I quite enjoyed it. The way it was written was fairly unique. Jumping from narrative to descriptive. Some of the descriptions were too much and I was hankering to get back to the plot. Read full review

Whatever it's reputation, I really loved this book. It is truly a masterpiece of American Romanticism and deserves to be known as Melville's magnum opus. It will also provide an excellent case study for my pet project in 'geographical criticism'. Read full review

Here's a cliche (though it's true): You are going to get out of this book what you put into it. This book is brilliant but it is about as dense as a novel can get, with the exceptions of maybe Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake. Read full review
