This is an awful event that is never discussed in our history books. The book is comprehensive. My one criticism is that at times the authors went back and forth with their timeline and that was confusing. Read full review

Jack Bass is a professor emeritus of humanities and social sciences at the College of Charleston. He is the author or coauthor of seven other books about the American South.
