Review: Ghost Story

Editorial Review - Bookreporter.com

For four aging men in the terrorstricken town of Milburn, New York, an act inadvertently carried out in their youth has come back to haunt them. Now they are about to learn what happens to those who believe they can bury the past and get away with murder. Peter Straub's classic bestseller is a work of "superb horror" (The Washington Post Book World) that, like any good ghost story, stands the test of time and conjures our darkest fears and nightmares. I've only known of Peter Straub through his collaborations with Stephen King on "The Talisman" and "Black House" (both fantastic fiction novels). So when I started to branch out from my "Stephen King Only" fiction mentality, I started with Peter Straub. After reading great reviews of "Ghost Story," that's where I decided to start... and was not disappointed. "Ghost Story" is exactly that... but unlike one I've ever read before. Great character development of 'haunted' characters, none of which Mr. Straub places in a "back-seat" of narrative. For example, I found the character of Lewis Benedikt to be the most intriguing... far more than the "main" character of Ricky Hawthorne. No matter what, Straub is able to breathe life into his characters through his writing and makes the main characters (and even the town of Milburn) enjoyable and memorable to the reader. The excellent writing also makes the steady thrumming of the 'ghost story' more interesting, page-turning, and (at moments) truly scary.
Overall, great story that stands the test of time (written in 1979... the year I was born) and can be seen as a truly unique approach to the classical "Ghost Story."
