Born from a white Mother and black Father, Mary remembers and shares her feelings of what it was like  growing up in 1950’s Britain, as a mixed race child.
She battles with overt racism from both black and white as she tries to settle into a predominantly white society; never quite belonging there. A life that many mixed race children born in the UK today can still identity with, despite their growing numbers..
Mary recalls fond memories of her childhood with the love and affection of her adored Grand Mother, who raised  her  from a baby, as well as the painful ones.
In her teens she discovers her black roots which influence the way she sees herself through other peoples eyes.  The emotional pull away from her childhood perceptions and values, forces her to make choices between her black and white bloodline.
Will she defend and embrace her black side, or will she try to become as culturally white as she can.?
Just what colour does she want to be................?

About the author (2009)

Katie Jayne was born to an African Father and English Mother in 1951. Raised by her English Grand Mother on a housing estate in North London she learnt to embrace her white side but later adopted West Indian cultures as her own, through friends. These cultures became the foundations to build her life and future on. At 20 she had a son and raised him alone until she married in 1977. This ended in divorce 10 years later after having a daughter.  She raised her children alone over a total period of 17 years and has two grand children by her son. Katie unofficially adopted her daughter’s school friend, who originated from Vietnam over 13 years ago. More recently her Christian faith has lead her to the American bible belt in the deep south, where she married a 'real country boy' from the Smoky mountains of East Tennessee.  Her first book ‘not just Black or White’ is based on a semi autobiography account of her own life.
