Cattle Brands in Arizona: A Bibliography of Published Territorial and State Brand Registration Books

Front Cover
Northland Press, 1968 - Cattle brands - 45 pages
In order to fully understand the significance of cattle branding in Arizona, one must first understand the history of cattle raising itself. A Brand Book is a lot more than a printed record of all the irons registered at the time of its publication. It is a local extension of a tradition which goes back to the time when for thousands of years simple agricultural and stock-breeding societies peopled the world. Cattle brand registration in the area now occupied by the State of Arizona can be dated from January 12, 1778 when Brigadier Teodoro de Croix, Commandant-General of the Interior Provinces, posted his decree to the effect that all ranchers in the area had four months from the date of posting to corral and brand their cattle.
