My last encounter with history was on the high school and as the subject consisted mainly of memorizing data, I hated it with passion. This book succeeded to remove this conditioning, which is probably the best praise I could give. The history is not presented as a plain sequence of facts, but as a hypnotizing whirl of events, relations and people’s lives. On the other the author gives sources so that the reader can make his own opinions, if he wishes to, and sometimes the author does not hide that there are conflicting views of the events, which is good. What I don’t like is the excessive focus on politics and that sometimes the paragraphs read as a bullet list, not a prose.
