Early childhood education: an international encyclopediaUser Review - Book Verdict
This title fills a long-standing gap in major reference works devoted solely to early childhood education, the last being Garland'sEncyclopedia of Early Childhood Education (1992). Aiming this work at students, policy analysts, and general readers, editors New (Tufts Univ.) and Cochran (Cornell) have assembled more than 300 international contributors to produce an encyclopedia of both breadth and depth. The first three volumes contain over 300 A-to-Z entries on early childhood development and education in the United States that cover major historical and contemporary issues, current research, and a variety of theoretical and policy perspectives. All the entries are cross-referenced and conclude with a list of works cited as well as recommended readings. In addition, the entries are tied together in the "Guide to Related Topics" section, which groups them under such subjects as "Child Care," "Curriculum and Pedagogy," "Health and Special Needs," "Family and Society," and "Social Policies." Volume 4 contains 100-plus entries on the structure and policies of early childhood education in ten countries covering all inhabited continents outside North America. The countries were selected to showcase early childhood education in a wide range of societies: stable (e.g., France, Italy), rapidly changing (e.g., Brazil, China, Czech Republic), free-market oriented (e.g., Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom), or heavily government-invested (e.g., Sweden).Bottom Line The only lacuna in coverage is the lack of representation of early childhood education in the least developed countries or war-torn areas of the globe. While data for such countries may be virtually nonexistent, discussion of the issue would still be valuable. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries.-Nadine Cohen Baker, Univ. of Georgia, Athens
