A very exhaustive analysis of every characteristic of Pendleton county Virginia. There are anomalies caused by the OCR scanning of the text. A normal imagination can easily read around this by understanding and adapting to the errors. To get a deeper understanding of the geography of the area I would recommend having a good topographic map handy. In the early days of the pioneers every geographic description contains reference to hills, valleys and bodies of water.
One wonderful surprise was in the, again, very detailed examination of the forces behind the inevitable war between the states. I have never read a better explanation of the differing view points held prior to the war. It was not taught in school how complex and diverse the feelings ran in the country at that time.
I would recommend reading this book for just this portion alone.
