The aims of this research work were, firstly, to study Beethoven's dynamics relating to the structure of a composition on different levels (movement, section and phrase), and the way themes and their transformation are characterised by their dynamic colouring; secondly, to compare dynamic action with concurrent patterns of other elements for their similarity or differences; thirdly, to observe how Beethoven's approach to dynamic notation varied according to the evolution of his style and the medium of performance. Another important aspect was the relationship of dynamics to expression: to convey a mood, highlight special moments, and raise (or shatter) harmonic or structural expectations [Abstract, p. i]
