Mr. Treadgold has produced a readable narrative, and has wisely relegated the controversies to the footnotes. Which are totally sequentially numbered, a very good idea. His book covers a sixty year period, which is coincidental with a reform of the Byzantine state from a totally defensive organization to one capable of extensive expansion. The maps and charts are reasonable, and quite informative. Altogether, a book which will have a wide audience among Byzantinists, looking for guidance in sorting out the real significance in the Iconoclast controversy, and students of the protracted life of institutions, giving some ideas into where to trim and expand your efforts. And it's well written,
