Chew's Ashby, Shoemaker's Lynchburg, and the Newtown ArtilleryCaptain John Wright Carter's Company of the Virginia Horse Artillery was organized in 1861 under the command of Captain Roger Preston Chew. It served in the 7th Virginia Cavalry which was under the command of Turner Ashby. In 1862 when it became an independent company known as Chew's Battery and served in the Laurel Brigade. The company later served in Pelham's, Beckham's, and Chew's battalions of the Stuart Horse Artillery. In 1864 it came under the command of Captain James Walton Thomson and then under Captain John Wright Carter in 1865. It also served in Major James W. Thomson's Battalion of Rosser's Cavalry. It was also known as Ashby Artillery or Ashby Battery. |
