Traitors: The Worst Acts of Treason in American History from Benedict Arnold to Robert Hanssen
In this time of great patriotism, no crime seems more heinous than that of treason. Yet many of us understand little of the full impact of treasonous acts, and the price our nation has paid for them.
In this book, award-winning journalist Richard Sale recounts the stories of those whose actions betrayed America and put the safety of every citizen at risk, from Benedict Arnold, whose name has become a synonym for traitor, to Robert Hanssen, the FBI staffer who sold secrets to the KGB for 22 years. Included, along with photographs, are thoughtful explorations on the motives and the mindsets of Robert Hanssen, John Wilkes Booth, and others, in fascinating, detailed accounts of the worst acts of treason ever committed against America.

Traitors: the worst acts of treason in American history from Benedict Arnold to Robert HanssenUser Review - Book Verdict
Sale, who covers terrorism and counterintelligence for UPI, here analyzes the well-known cases of Benedict Arnold, John Wilkes Booth, Elizabeth Bentley, Whittaker Chambers, John Walker, and Robert Hanssen while also briefly discussing some lesser-known traitors. What comes through clearly in these full case studies is that the psychological defects that caused these individuals to act the way they did can often be traced to their upbringing. And while ideology certainly played a part in some betrayals, in most cases money and ego were more important factors. (Arnold sought glory, Booth was filled with zeal for the Confederates, and Walker and Hanssen wanted money.) The book ends with an interesting section on 9/11, when Washington feared that the terrorists had inside information about the protective movement of government leaders owing to Hanssen's selling the procedures to the Russians years earlier; fortunately, they did not.
