Tagmemic analysis is a form of grammatical analysis developed by the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), founded in 1934 by W. Cameron Townsend, and designed for missionaries. The SIL uses this system to record and analyze languages, to facilitate the translation of the Bible. Linguists trained in this method, therefore, work around the world collecting vast amounts of data which have been used to refine the system. Tagmemic analysis is a theory of grammar that utilizes the grammatical unit, or tagmeme, and the construction or syntagmeme, as the basis of the analytic system to arrive at a representation of the structure of a language. This book presents a primer on the development of these concepts by SIL trained linguists, and explains their usage.
