Critical survey of short fictionUser Review - Book Verdict
Begun in 1981 and revised in 1993, this survey has now been redrafted to include 133 new authors in addition to the 347 already included. As with most of the Salem Press/Magill works, this seven-volume set is a well-crafted and sturdy resource. Each essay contains birth and death date information, a serviceable biography, a summary of major achievements, and a combination of story review and analysis of some of the author's primary short works. In addition, many entries now include a photograph of the author. The information is sufficient to start a research inquiry, answer a basic reference question, or gain an overview of a particular author's work. The authors included range from the expected (John Barth) to the up-and-coming (Rick Bass) and are international in scope. Volume 7 includes review essays (17 more added to the already existing 12) that are scholarly in approach and cover such topics as the types of short stories (fable and detective), the history of the short story over time ("The Saga to the Late Twentieth Century"), and the various cultures producing short stories (e.g., Irish, Native American). Rounding out the series are indexes to geographical location and subjects or subgenres as well as a listing of major awards and award winners. As with any revision, the question remains, Does my library need to update? The answer depends on how old and how heavily used your current set is. Certainly, those libraries owning and making good use of the 1981 set should strongly consider buying this edition, as 40 percent of the material is new. Libraries getting little use out of the 1993 set or that simply need some treatment of the short fiction form in modern times would do well by purchasing the excellent The Columbia Companion to the Twentieth-Century American Short Story (LJ 3/1/01) and putting the roughly $500 savings into other parts of the collection.
