The vast continent of Australia is still a place apart. It is the world's oldest continent, but little is known about its ancient past. There is a unique feel to Australia -- the reversed seasons, flowers that don't smell, distinctive wildlife and, of course, its diverse people. Blessed by a near-perfect climate, life in Australia has a unique pace and Australians are among the most hospitable people on earth.

There are real secrets to Australia, and this book recommends some favorites, with the emphasis on how to have a good time. It covers what to see and how to get there, from the "Wild West" of the Northern Territory and the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef to the vibrant cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne. Each of Australia's states and territories is covered in separate sections, all extensively revised. Many excerpts from literature, by and about Australians, are included and the idiosyncrasies of "Aussie" life are examined in essays on topics such as the irreverent Aussie vocabulary, pubs, wine, sports, cinema and the uneasy status of the native Aborigines. Carl Robinson's entertaining and intelligent guidebook gives the traveler a wonderful introduction to this enigmatic country.
