Any Wednesday I'm YoursUser Review - Book Verdict
This amusing and thought-provoking first novel features an angst-ridden ex-newspaper employee, now working at the questionable Motel Tulan outside San Juan, Puerto Rico. Events at the motel--lovers' rendezvous, drug dealers' meetings, politicians' secret bamboozlings--change Julian's life. At first, he wants a topic for an article--the growth of drug trafficking in the Parallel 37 barrio, for example--but then his dalliance with a motel guest leads to an investigation of murder. Some heady stuff here, characterized by a philosophical outlook, cynicism, and not a little brooding frustration. For most collections. Santos-Febres, considered at the forefront of the new "Latin noir" fiction, first wrote this novel in Spanish and then translated it into English.
