Oceania, a part of Europe, is totally controlled by Big Brother as they go through a continuous war with other parts of Europe and Asia. Winston goes through the days, having to control his body language in hopes they won't betray his thoughts of knowing that there must be more to life than what he is experiencing as he has to tries to decipher his child hood dreams and memories. Each and every move is seen by Big Brother from the telescreens. One false move can betray your thought which in itself is a crime which you will be taken by Big Brother and can be completely erased from the books as if you never existed. This book is wonderful in its telling of Winston's experience. It is crazy to believe that this could happen to us if we let the government have total control if we want protection. Though the year 1984 has passed, this could happen to us if we are ready to give up everything in the name of safety.
