After family holidays in Devon and Cornwall,
Sue Viccars returned to the southwest to study at Exeter University and, apart from a brief spell with a London publishing company (mainly working on a tourist guide to Devon), has lived on Dartmoor's fringes ever since. A 20-year career at David & Charles publishers commissioning walking and outdoor books has been followed by a successful freelance career as an editor and author specialising in the southwest. Her first book,
50 Walks in Devon (AA Publishing), led to family walking books on Dartmoor, Exmoor and Cornwall (Jarrold/Crimson) and she has worked on guides to the southwest for Time Out and the AA.
Sue has written about family cycle routes in Devon and Cornwall and many articles for both national and local press, including BBC Countryfile Magazine, Country Life, Beautiful Britain and Exmoor: the country magazine.
She is also editor of the Dartmoor Magazine (Edgemoor Publishing).
She has explored Devon and Cornwall extensively through her regular work revising Pathfinder walking guides (Jarrold/Crimson) – she originally discovered many of the places covered in this guide on foot!
Sue lives in a cottage on the eastern edge of Dartmoor and has two sons.
