The translation for this book is terrible. The description is flat and the grammar makes almost no sense. There is nothing surprising, intense, or exciting about the plot. Odysseus simply wanders from on Greek island to another, flirting with women as he heads homeward to his wife Penelope.
The "climatic" battle goes almost exactly as planned, even despite the fact that the suitors obtain weapons. Athena simply renders them useless.
There's nothing heroic about Odysseus. He come's across as an utter fool, and an ancient Gary Stu.
How it is this book has survived this long, I do not know. I often think that the Odyssey should have been lost in the sands of time, to be forever forgotten.
