I think the whole world would be better off if everyone had a sense of breathing space as it is defined in this book. The author maintains that all of us are facing too much competing for our attention too much of the time. Once you realize itís the accumulation of all those things competing for your attention that gets in the way of your productivity and effectiveness, you begin almost organically to quote pear-down and quote as the author says. You literally remove the excess stuff on your desk in your shelves, in your filing cabinets, in your office. You are also more judicious with the electronic files that you create, download, or otherwise maintain. By taking a methodical approach to the items and information that populate your environment and keeping clutter at by a little at a time, slowly, but surely, you begin to feel as if you are in control. I have just started reading the book for a second time, and am gaining additional perspective.
Breathing Space is a good anecdote to the frenzied existence that we all seem to be experiencing these days. Rather than popping pills of slugging down drinks, it appears possible that one can take an intellectual/philosophical approach to our sped-up society and though brain power, begin to take back control. The author definitely respects readers in giving them startling statistics, rationale, specific how-to steps, and personal philosophy as to what it takes to maintain Breathing Space in your own life. I think anyone who is juggling a variety of responsibilities and issues could benefit from this book, certainly anyone who supervises others, who has children, or has other vital responsibilities.
