Evaluating Executive Functioning, Academic Achievement and Emotional Control with Adolescent Females in a Residential Treatment Center
In the United States, there are more than 10,000 adolescent females residing in residential treatment facilities. Most have been placed in these restrictive settings because their behaviors have endangered themselves or others. Residential treatment centers (RTCs) are one of the most expensive treatment options available for adolescents. However, they have long had difficulty demonstrating their effectiveness. Many of the problems related to treatment success seem to have resulted from a failure to individualize services based on a child's neurodevelopmental abilities. One of the most common neuropsychological disabilities for clients with behavioral and emotional disabilities is in the area of the executive functioning (EF). This study used the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Parent Rating Scale (BRIEF-PRS), a behavioral checklist that assesses EF. However, its validity has never been demonstrated for a population of adolescent females in a RTC. Limited research has indicated a mild to moderate relationship exists between EF and academic functioning, and EF and emotional functioning.
