LET'S PRETEND THIS NEVER HAPPENED: (A Mostly True Memoir)

Editorial Review - Kirkus - Jane Doe

A mostly funny, irreverent memoir on the foibles of growing up weird. In blogger Lawson's debut book, "The Bloggess" (thebloggess.com) relies entirely on her life stories to drive an unconventional narrative. While marketed as nonfiction, it's a genre distinction the author employs loosely (a point made clear in the book's subtitle). On the opening page she defends the subtitle, explaining, "The ... Editorial Review - Bookreporter.com

When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father and a morbidly eccentric childhood. A sort of backwards fall into great adventures
This book is great at finding a core of personal insecurity, building a big wall around it, shattering the wall for no good reason, then kicking the
insecurity out the door again, hoping it minds it's own stinking business like it should. Jenny did a great job putting a great voice to these posts. It's that beyond-the-screen sort of look at a person's thoughts an inner workings that may or may not be so obvious from the blog itself, or maybe not so tidily told as in these stories. Together, the whole of it shows a great constancy of chaos, questionable obsessions with dead things, and an adventurous style that makes the author seem like she's be a hilarious and dreadful meal companion all at once. Ms. Lawson is definitely the kind of person you'd bring around to get the stories out of and just to see what she's going to do in a new situation.
