About the author (1986)

David Douglas Duncan was born in Kansas City, Missouri on January 23, 1916. He graduated from the University of Miami in 1938. After graduation, he became a freelance photographer and photojournalist. During World War II, he was a Marine officer and combat photographer. After the war, he became a staff photographer for Life magazine. He covered the Korean conflict and the war in Vietnam, which resulted in the books This Is War and I Protest! respectively. His other books included The Kremlin, Self-Portrait: U.S.A., and Sunflowers for Van Gogh. Duncan's friendship with Pablo Picasso resulted in numerous books including The Private World of Pablo Picasso, Picasso's Picassos, Goodbye Picasso, The Silent Studio, Viva Picasso: A Centennial Celebration, 1881-1981, and Picasso and Jacqueline. He died on June 7, 2018 at the age of 102.
