Whisperings of Magic
It has been three years since the friends last met.
Dahl has done much since then; he is no longer the nameless boy called from his hiding place on earth to defend his home against the Usurper. He is now, rightfully and proudly, the King of Taun, a confident and sure ruler who has brought peace and prosperity to his realm.
But Catryn, too, has grown and changed in the last years. Once merely a spirited serving girl, she is now Seer of Taun, a shapeshifter whose alternate bodies are cats, and possessed of extraordinary powers of magic. She is also the bearer of devastating news: the peace Dahl fought so hard to win is crumbling, stealthily unravelled by a dark force once thought vanquished. Are Catryn and Dahl strong enough, even together, to conquer the evil again?

Review: Whisperings of Magic (Dragonfire #2)User Review - Goodreads
This is one of the books I remember best from childhood. I absolutely adored this book back in elementary school. Along with the masterworks of Tolkien, Whisperings of Magic helped define good fantasy for me and made me fall in love with the genre.
