About the author (1983)

Mackerras is chairman of the School of Modern Asian Studies at Griffith University in Australia. He holds degrees in Chinese language and history and in 1970 received his Ph.D. from Australian National University for his studies on Beijing opera. He taught at the Beijing Institute of Foreign Languages from 1964 to 1966, and at that time began collecting an extensive library on Chinese theater.
