History of the North American Theater: The United States, Canada and Mexico from Pre-Columbian Times to the Present
The third and final volume of Continuum's set on the History of World Theater. All the world's a stage! Yet the multicultural dimension of the American continent's stage remained an untold story until Felicia LondrT and Daniel Watermeier raised the curtain on the entire North American theatrical scene. This volume will fascinate scholar, student, and casual reader alike. With some 300 illustrations-many rare and previously unpublished-an extensive index, and separate bibliographies for each historical period, this volume is the perfect companion for anyone interested in the theater.>

At almost 500 pages, this is not, in any sense of the word, light reading. North America has seen a vast amount and variety of theatre, all of which the authors have attempted to survey in their book. I have not read the entire book and cannot comment on more than a sliver of it. Indeed, I wonder who could, apart from the authors themselves? The coverage of the development of theatre in Toronto offers a good summary of the past two centuries. There are some small errors of detail, only to be expected in a work of this scope, but the story is there in readable form. I admire the authors' success in packing so much information (and there really is a lot of it) into a single book without creating a text so dry and factually terse as to be indigestible.
The history of North American theater: the United States, Canada, and Mexico: from pre-Columbian times to the presentUser Review - Book Verdict
With other histories of American theater now out of print (among them Barnard Hewitt's Theatre USA and Garff B. Wilson's Three Hundred Years of American Drama and Theatre), this excellent work fills a gap while also taking the opportunity to expand "America" to include all of North America. Londre (theater, Univ. of Missouri, Kansas City) and Watermeier (theater, Univ. of Toledo) open the text with chapters devoted to theater of the Maya, the Aztec, and a number of North American tribes, then expand to "new Spain," "new France," the American Colonies, and the Caribbean; and continue with the inclusion of Canada and Mexico up to the present. Like many other surveys that try to cover such enormous amounts of material, this book leaves us wanting more, but it offers an excellent introduction and far-ranging coverage. Recommended for all libraries.--Susan L. Peters, Emory Univ. Lib., Atlanta
