Luis Bu?uel, one of the most brilliant representatives of the surrealist movement, chose to make films and was able to make them with unflagging fidelity to his principles for fifty years. After an audacious Parisian showing of Un Chien Andalou in 1929 (Bu?uel carried stones in his pockets in case he needed them to fend off the audience), Bu?uel's subsequent career in Spain (Las Hurdes), Hollywood and Mexico (Los Olvidados, Robinson Crusoe, El, Nazarin) before returning to France (Diary of aChambermaid, Belle de jour, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, That Obscure Object of Desire), showed that the only subjects he cared to make films about were the three that are never supposed to be discussed in polite society: sex, religion, and politics.

About the author (2005)

bill krohn has been the Hollywood correspondent of the influential movie magazine Cahiers du cinema for over twenty years. During this time he has interviewed many of Hitchcock's closest collaborators. It was the difference between the man they described and the man he thought he knew that motivated him to write this book.

Based on new research of Hitchcock's personal papers and film studio archives, hitchcock at work invites the reader to share the creative secrets of the century's greatest movie magician whose films still terrify and delight people all over the world.

Paul Duncan found himself in the right place at the right time as South Africa came into its own with creative design and decor a few years ago. He was the highly successful editor of Conde Nast House & Garden and has had the opportunity to work with the best local and international photographers - notably Fritz von der Schulenberg - as well as art directors and features writers to capture the outstanding interiors put together by interior designers such as Graham Viney, Stephen Falcke, Stefan Antoni and Boyd Ferguson, architects like Johann Slee and Silvio Rechs and inspired homemakers from Sandton to Graaff Reinet to Plettenberg Bay. Paul Duncan is now Head of Design, Menswear & Homeware at Woolworths and as involved with design and South African innovation as ever, with more books in the pipeline.
