I'm a big soccer fan and thought I would be a huge fan of this book, yet I did not find it engaging. The most interesting part of the book was the discussion of Jewish soccer teams as I was unaware of this history.
While I found the book informative, I was unable to find a theme that really tied it all together and it came across as disjointed. It seemed more like 10 long blog posts by someone who liked to travel and do research instead of an actual book.

This book would be decent for someone who knows nothing of european soccer and does no research on the validity on most of the conclusions drawn in this book. I really wouldn't bother.

I actually love this book. I am business nerd and a soccer fan. Put the two together and you get this gem of a book. The book also gives some insight into the lives of soccer hooligans.

I knew little about the global soccer clubs this book focuses on beforehand. This book had a lot to offer about the politics of the game and the parallel politics and skirmishes at the nation-state level. Well done. Read full review

Franklin Foer taught me something about hooliganism in continental soccer and its relationship, in some countries, to right wing nationalist groups. The book, published in 2004, is very dated, however ... Read full review
