I'm a big soccer fan and thought I would be a huge fan of this book, yet I did not find it engaging. The most interesting part of the book was the discussion of Jewish soccer teams as I was unaware of this history.
While I found the book informative, I was unable to find a theme that really tied it all together and it came across as disjointed. It seemed more like 10 long blog posts by someone who liked to travel and do research instead of an actual book.

I think I may have enjoyed reading the Goodreads reviews of this book even more than the book itself, although I did enjoy this serendipitously-timed read during this year's World Cup. To an ... Read full review

The examples the author uses to support his main point of soccer as analog to... something about the world (globalization? nationalism? culture war? actual war?) are incredibly specific and localized ... Read full review

User Review  - Jonathan Christ - Goodreads

Many of the chapters seemed to hang on one single phenomenon, the parallels between soccer hooliganism and nationalism, and therefore I can't say the book was as broad as I was hoping. But overall ... Read full review
