Can a reader be considered qualified in giving some sensible comment on the book read back in the 1970-80ies? - I believe that's possible - if only by the reason that the after-taste of enjoyment and pleasure then felt, has transformed into a concept, and concepts do not fade, the same as their sense. Vidal succeeded in creating a toy-fiction, and his instinct at the genre so much needed deserves praise.
The merits of the book - like mastery, tact, sense of proportion - I can not recollect them in details but they must certainly exist, otherwise I would not remeber it in the terms of 'light' and 'pleasing'.

Vidal does it and wins the trust and the gratitude of the reader - for experiencing a complex of feelings, a mixture of the boyhood-period adventureous game, and elegantly distributed elements of humor and irony adults so cherish.
