The author makes a misleading statement on the principles of FTIR (Page 22). "Interferogram signals are additive, so the actual signal measured by the detector will be sum of two cosine waves seen in top of figure 2.5." This is never meant to be so. Only electric field can sums up directly. The signal received by detector, called "intensity", is square of electric field.
FTIR works due to lack of spatial or temporal coherence in normal lambs. The author must emphasize this prerequisite before giving previous statement. In fact, I found no books talking about this at all.
