Page 269 - I remember the black wharves and the slips, And the sea-tides tossing free; And Spanish sailors with bearded lips, And the beauty and mystery of the ships, And the magic of the sea. And the voice of that wayward song Is singing and saying still: "A boy's will is the wind's will, And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.
Page 117 - No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were.
Page 40 - In this year dire portents appeared over Northumbria and sorely frightened the people. They consisted of immense whirlwinds and flashes of lightning, and fiery dragons were seen flying in the air.
Page 25 - WHEN Britain first at Heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, This was the charter of the land, And guardian angels sung the strain : Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves ! Britons never shall be slaves.
Page 14 - Every continent has its own great spirit of place. Every people is polarized in some particular locality, which is home, the homeland. Different places on the face of the earth have different vital effluence, different vibration, different chemical exhalation, different polarity with different stars : call it what you like. But the spirit of place is a great reality.

Page 61 - A man travels the world over in search of what he needs, and returns home to find it - George Moore © Copyright 2002 Alan Hodgkiss.
Page 211 - Now he who exercises his reason and cultivates it seems to be both in the best state of mind and most dear to the gods. For if the gods have any care for human affairs, as they are thought to have, it would be reasonable both that they should delight in that which was best and most akin to them (ie reason) and that they should reward those who love and honour this most, as caring for the things that are dear to them...
