Core J2ME Technology & MIDP

Front Cover
Prentice Hall PTR, 2002 - Computers - 710 pages
This is the complete developers guide for Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) and more specifically, the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP). This book provides extensive coverage of the development of MIDlets (MIDP applications). It will be the critical reference for J2ME developers, specifically with regard to the development of applications on wireless, mobile devices such as cellular phones and two-way pagers.
-- Covers Java 2 Micro Edition, Connected Limited Device Configuration (J2ME CLDC) Version 1.0.2
-- Provides coverage of key technologies such as Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP)
-- Provides complete coverage of the MIDP programming interface through comprehensive, well documented programming examples

Java 2 Platform Micro Edition, J2ME is Sun Microsystems' answer to a consumer wireless device platform. J2ME allows developers to use Java and the J2ME wireless toolkit to create applications and programs for wireless and mobile devices. The use of wireless devices such as cellular phones and two-way pagers has undergone tremendous growth over the past few years. As the wireless market matures, people will demand more advanced reliable applications. Sun and a group of wireless industry leaders such as Nokia, Ericsson, NEC, Research In Motion (RIM), DoCoMo, LG TeleCom, Samsung and Motorola and Palm defined a new set of standards called Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) to help develop and deploy the next generation wireless applications. Connected. Limited Device Configuration, CLDC is the J2ME configuration for smaller handheld devices that are usually battery operatedand low in memory with limited processing power and low bandwidth. Mobile Information Device Profile, MIDP is a set of J2ME APIs that define how software applications interface with cellular phones and two-way pagers.

The book consists of three parts. Part I provides an introduction to J2ME as well as the key technologies such as CLDC and MIDP. Part II provides the reader with tools and examples for programming with MIDP. Part III concludes the book with the MIDP API as well as the Display Manager API.

This book is targeted at Java developers looking for a book that provides through coverage of the entire MIDP API using extensive code examples.
