Based on a true story of the sinking of the ex cruise ship " Wilhelm Gustloff" on 30 th January 1945. The ship was carrying 6,100 regugees. 5,000 people lost their lives when a Russian submarine torpedoed the ship in the Baltic Sea.

A wonderful study of various characters wihtout a hero figure and in absence of any black and white thinking. Maybe a tad too pessimistic in the end, but still one of the best post-war German novels I know. Read full review
