To call someone mad is one of the most efficient methods of censorship. In the old USSR, critics of the regime, otherwise 'mens sana' were routinely certified insane and shipped off to aylums in the Siberian wastelands for treatment. Silencing through sectioning continues to be a well-honed tool of authoritarian regimes. While in the West, the mentally ill are at the very least stigmatised, or at worst suffer total social and economic exclusion. Has our understanding and attitudes to mental illness improved over the years?
