An immense survey of the evidence supporting Professor Toynbee's idea that civilizations can be classified according to standard criteria. He believes he has identified 31 examples of these phenomena, including our own (Western Christian), and has some opinions regarding our current prospects. His system is valuable in studying world history, and he has modern disciples including O'Neill and the editors of the London Times Atlas of World History. I find his work quite intelligent though it is controversial in some circles. It is literate, and uses a very broad number of quotations mostly from secondary sources to bolster his arguments.
