Dislocatinng China:

Reflections on Muslims, Minorities, and Other Subaltern Subjects
Front Cover
5 Reviews
C. Hurst & Co. Publishers, 2004 - Muslims - 414 pages
This book seeks to challenge the way in which China and Chinese-ness is generally understood, privileged on a central tradition, a core culture, that tends to marginalise or peripheralise anything or anyone who does not fit that essential core. The Hui Muslim Chinese discussed in this volume demonstrate that one can be an integral part of Chinese society and yet challenge many of our assumptions about that society itself. For that reason they and other so-called minority ethnics have generally been ignored by Western scholarship.

Dru Gladney is acknowledged as an expert on the Muslim ethnic peoples of China, particularly the Uyghurs and the Hui. This book is aimed at a scholarly audience but a must read for anyone seeking a greater understanding of how Muslim ethnicity sits in China, how it affects China and how Chinese policies affect it. Being first published in 2004, and not revised as of yet, it tends to be somewhat dated, however the theories it explores hold nonetheless true today.
