Fronterizas: una novela en seis cuentos
In Fernandez's own Spanish version of her award-winning book, Intaglio: A Novel in Six Stories, the reader discovers a tightly-woven coming-of-age novel made up of sensitive portraits of six extraordinary women born in the early twentieth century near the Texas-Mexican border. By observing the lives of her various mentors, Nenita learns to rise above the limitations that the culture of la frontera imposed on women of her mother's generation who nonetheless were able to find outlets for their creative expressions.

A fifth-generation Texan, Fern ndez received the 1991 Multicultural Publishers Exchange Award for the English-language version of this book, written 12 years ago. Now, Arte Publico has brought this set of binational, bicultural tales full circle in the author's own Spanish-language translation. Set primarily along the Texas-Mexican border in the years following the Mexican Revolution, each of the six stories features memorable women whose diverse artistic talents somehow influence narrator Nenita, a member of a younger generation. Fern ndez draws complex, sometimes enigmatic characters and explores the ambiguous relationships resulting from the border-straddling realities of Nenita's extended Mexican American family. Even though Fern ndez explicitly defines her book as a novel, she expands the definition of this genre by sequencing the stories in a nonlinear, nonchronological order. Despite their thematic unity and consistent point of view, the stories stand up well on their own and can be read independently. Fern ndez's tone is in harmony with her narrative voice, and her language is agreeably and authentically regional. Overall, she manages an artful translation of her only novel to date. Recommended for academic and public libraries and bookstores interested in the Texas-Mexican border culture. Bruce Jensen, Spanish in Our Libraries (SOL), Hollywood, CA ...
