About the author (1996)

Gierlich started her travels at a young age. She continued travelling on her own as a student at UC Berkley. She's hiked most of the western USA, trekked in the Nepal Himalayas, travelled hut-to-hut in the Swiss Alps and climbed Mont Blanc, in between fine dining and wine-tasting seminars. If she's not running, surfing or hiking, she's probably cooking, reading about mountaineering or listening to Ravi Shankar with husband Paul.

Keller worked in the alternative press for several years, doing every aspect of newspaper work from editorial and reporting to delivering the papers. She returned to university to earn a master's degree in journalism, graduating in 1986.
