The author, a woodcarver (mainly of marionettes and masks for the theater) who had studied at the Bauhaus with Paul Klee, fled to Paris in April 1933. At the beginning of the war, she and her husband were interned by the French as enemy aliens. After the German occupation of France, they were released from the camps and lived through the war, fleeing from one hiding place to the next with the help of French Protestant pastors and the support of various relief organizations. During this time she gave birth to three children. After the war the couple worked in a Youth Aliyah home and emigrated to Israel with a group from this home.
