About the author (1979)

Born and educated in France, Albert Guerard came to the United States as a college teacher of French in 1906 and did much to interpret the civilization of his native land. He wrote many excellent volumes that combine erudition and "esprit" with literary elegance. His France in the Classical Age has long been a classic. His autobiography, Personal Equation (1948), is out of print, as is his Testament of a Liberal (1956).
