A Manual of European Languages for Librarians

Front Cover
Covering a total of 38 languages spoken in Europe, the "Manual of European Languages for Librarians" (MELL2) provides librarians -- in public, private and corporate institutions -- involved in cataloguing and acquiring foreign-language literature with a swift and complex work-tool. In addition to examples taken from contemporary Europe, the manual also includes languages such as Ancient Greek, Latin, Esperanto, Afrikaans, Basque and Catalan.

Owing to their clear structure, the individual chapters greatly facilitate the understanding of title pages and introductions. Sample texts demonstrate the structure of each language, illustrate general characteristics of bibliographic terminology and detail both alphabet and grammatical structure of the languages included. Each chapter is introduced by a short text, whose translation into English also provides a comparative view of structure and word order of the respective language. For some languages, older forms and their pronunciation are provided too. Furthermore, each chapter features a glossary containing the English equivalents of relevant terms on books, periodicals, electronic media plus an index of words and endings.
