Not illustrated. 1873 Excerpt: ...sense is man so far out of the reach and power of his fellow man that he can produce no real change in him, neither in breaking the obstinacy of his spirit, nor truly changing the bent of his depraved nature, it must bo a power superior, and that, "The power of God" (John i. 13). Thus when the Holy Ghost works upon an otherwise uncontrollable man, He brings him under divine restraint, breaks his stubborn will, and manifests divine authority over him (Luke xi. 21, 22). Third, it is a creature much despised and ill-treated, and yet exceedingly useful; so are the children of God a people despised, who often feel the public scorn; arc pointed at by professor and profane; have the scoffs and jeers of an ungodly world; are often shamefully treated and persecuted; and like their divine Redeemer have to endure all sorts of contradictions against themselves; and yet are they exceedingly useful, for be it noted, for their sakes God preserves the world, and His providential mercies are continued to the ungodly therein. Fourth, the poor beast though dcspied was greatly honoured of the Lord in the days of His sojourn on earth (Luke xix. 34-36). So also are the children of God highly honoured of a precious Christ, for He dwells in them, is their salvation and All in All. He honours them with all grace here nnd all glory hereafter. Fifth, the despised creature bore the dear Redeemer through the streets of Jerusalem; so His people bear Him in their affections, desires, conduct and conversation through this world; which leads us to consider in how special a manner this part of our subject bears on the ministers of Christ, who, in the hands and under the direction of our spiritual Samson, by the assistance of their "jawbone" have in every age of the Gospe...
