Why Americans hate politics
Americans, by and large, have rejected the political process. They resent politicians, don't vote, and distrust government. The Washington Post's E.J. Dionne, Jr., has written an illuminating book that explains why the American political system is foundering; why most Americans have lost interest in participating; and how we may breathe vitality back into our public life.

If you’re interested in acquiring a better understanding of the “false polarization of false choices” that we’re struggling with in the United States today, you should check out Why Americans Hate Politics by E. J. Dionne, Jr. Although now dated, this very enlightening book will inform you of some interesting facts of our not-too-distant-past political history and it will give you a deeper insight into why we’re constantly in gridlock. When I read this book in about 1993, it went a long way in helping me to see why the conventional, one-dimensional view of the left-versus-right political spectrum is not an accurate portrayal of how politics really works. Why Americans Hate Politics is one of those books which may actually be life-changing: your grasp of the bigger picture can expand in a new way, so you’re subsequently able to tangent off on related areas of study and to see things from a new perspective. While this book is that good, one crucial component that is outside its scope and that it unfortunately does not address is the fact that both of the so-called major parties are financed and run by the same power elite, which has a conspiratorial agenda to push, and which does not hesitate to misleadingly pit one side against the other in order to keep people preoccupied with being stuck at a lower level of awareness and to divert their attention away from what is really happening behind the scenes. A discernment of that reality must be garnered through other resources.
Review: Why Americans Hate PoliticsUser Review - Goodreads
Dionne puts together a really interesting history of both major US political parties. His conclusion is somewhat weak and misguided; overall it's a valuable addition to American political history after the Second World War.
