The final chapter of the study, Chapter V, offers guidance in designing a program of fund-raising adaptable to conditions under which many small colleges operate. The chapter is intended to provide a basis for improvement in practices rather than a formal summary of recommendations. The formulation of objectives is aided by searching questions raised in the outline for a preliminary survey of the resources of the college. The measure of philanthropic support is presented for use as an instrument of objective self-appraisal. It is suggested that a marked improvement in the public relations of many colleges might be made through the prompt publication of more informative financial reports. The responsibility of college officers in the program of fund-raising is discussed. A recommended organization of staff is presented. Instead of centering all the functions and services in a development office, coordination by the administrative officer acting for the president is recommended. A plan designed to maintain the support and good will of benefactors is advocated. The chapter closes with a reminder that present friends of the college can be enlisted as ambassadors to potential donors.
