This project grew from a set ofdiscussions between Richard Serpe and Tim Owens in 1997 on how best to honor Sheldon Stryker, whose long career has given exemplary service to social psychology, symbolic interactionism, and identity theory. In particular it seemed that his influence on the development and continued discourse on identity theory was especially worthy ofnoting. With that thought in mind, Peter Burke, Shel's longtime colleague at Indi ana University and Peggy Thoits, a more recent colleague ofShel's at IU,joined to plan and complete the project. The team thus represents a student and three current or former col leagues ofShe\. While the order ofeditorship is alphabetical, Peter served as the correspon ding editor (e. g. , developed and maintained a project website, corresponded with the publisher and the contributors, and assembled the final volume. ). Peggy and Tim did much ofthe conference organizing work while Tim and Peter wrote conference grant proposals. We do not conceive of this volume as a static or strictly laudatory tribute to one man's life work. It is thus not a Festschrift in the traditional sense. Rather, we sought to honor one ofthe field's pioneers by critically examining and thoughtfully extending iden tity theory and research. We pursued this goal by first convening an academic mini-con ference in Bloomington, Indiana in the spring of200I.
