Paddling the Wild Neches
From its origins on a sandy hillside in Van Zandt County, the Neches River flows through the heart of East Texas. In its watershed lies some of the wildest country in Texas, tucked amid the remains of one of the finest hardwood forests in the world.
With the goal of keeping the Neches flowing free, East Texas native and riverman Richard M. Donovan takes readers canoeing down a two-hundred-mile stretch of the upper Neches. Through two national forests and mile after mile of remote river woodlands, he chronicles the riverís natural and cultural history, describes its animal inhabitants, recounts stories of early settlers and East Texas hunting traditions, and calls attention to the recreational potential of the river for paddlers and others, whether residents or visitors.
Donovan also makes a case against damming the river. He convincingly promotes the idea of turning the Neches into a National Wild and Scenic River, preserving forever the riverís natural flow and what remains of the verdant bottomlands of this historic watercourse.

Donovan has combined excerpts from a paddle trip down the upper and middle Neches River with east Texas hiatory as it applies to the neches drainage. This book excels at local history, especially hunting and fishing as it was practiced prior to about 1950. The excerpts from the travel log down the river are a little more average in interest and less detailed than the history. Nevertheless the trip account is still pleasant reading. Donovan's goal is to instill an appreciation of the natural flowing river and I believe he succeeds in that. For equipment and paddling techniques though, other more technical books are a better source. The essence oth this book is the natural wildlife and plantlife along the river and the history of the woods and the people of the Neches drainage.

This was a great read but not nearly as detailed as I would have liked. I think the potential for this to have been even more educational on east Texas' early days and on the river itself...ah, that would been fantastic! Read full review
