Autumn Years: Taking the Contemplative Path
This is a beginner's guide to contemplation for anyone in the second half of life and also a love story. Autumn Years describes the practice of contemplation as part of a strategy of successful aging. Recognizing that there is no single contemplative path, it includes: sitting meditation, centering prayer, walking meditation, and loving-kindness meditation. It also looks at other practices as well: yoga, lectio divina, koan study, music meditation, dream work, and even travel as pilgrimage.
'Shows that marriage is as much a spiritual journey as monasticism... youth only the beginning of the human exploration of wonder, divine passion, and holiness.' Laurence Freeman, O.S.B., director of the World Community of Christian Meditation

My experience with Joseph Smerke was the following. He was the principal of the annex of a catholic school I attended. He punched me in the head three times for responding to the conversation o a boy behind me on line. He told me I was too stupid to learn Latin and I was to use the class for a study period.. I made a remark a load in class, he told e to wait in the office for him . Where with the threat of expulsion if I declined he struck me on the buttocks with a paddle. I only wish to this day that I had informed my father or the police about this sick son of a bitch. Along with the recently deceased Paul Rampe they were responsible for physical abuse which destroyes any developing self esteem in a.14 year old boy. I only wish I could forgive these two bastards who e traded my education . I was a soldier and worked hard jobs but I must say these so called teachers were the worst in my life.
