The Pillar of Salt is a fictionalized account of the author's own experience of growing up in a Jewish family in French colonized Tunisia in the first half of the twentieth century. The protagonist, Alexandre Mordekhai Bennillouche, negotiates his various cultural identities to advance socially. The German occupation of Tunis and relocation of the protagonist intensify his struggles for identity and survival.
