The Rival MonsterThe Rival Monster begins with an alleged sighting of a flying saucer crashing in to the Loch Ness Monster. Rumours of Nessie's demise are followed by sighting of another unexplained creature near the Scottish islands of Great and Little Todday and the novel depicts the colourful characters who descend upon the islands to uncover the truth about this 'rival monster'. A romantic subplot concerns Bill Brown, a young palaeontologist who falls in love at first sight with local girl Elsie, but has to contend with both the disapproval of her pompous father and the fact that he frequently confuses her identical twin sister, Muriel, leading to several occasions of mistaken identity. |
